Review: ResMed Releases New Fabric AirTouch N30i Mask

By Brandon Peters, M.D.

Choosing a CPAP mask is a lot like finding the right pair of shoes: it is not one-size-fits-all, and what you might like is individualized, with both style and size as important considerations. It is always exciting to see a new mask design come to market, and the latest offering from ResMed is a promising innovation for those looking to explore a novel option. Learn more about the AirTouch N30i mask, including its fabric-wrapped frame and ComfiSoft cushion, and the pros and cons of the design in this review.

What’s New in the AirTouch N30i Mask?

There are several important innovations to consider with the AirTouch N30i mask. It builds on the popular AirFit N30i tube-up design, a variation on the Philips Dream Wear nasal pillow. The longer tubing connects at the top of the head, putting it out of the way. Air flows through the two side tubes that extend to the open nasal cushion fitted at the front. It has a unique fabric-wrapped frame, with multiple layers coated over silicone. The fabric is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking and may provide a durable interface.

In addition, the ComfiSoft cushion allows the nasal pillow to float at the end of the nose as the air flows into the mask. This fit may reduce leak and optimize performance.

Justin Leong, ResMed’s chief product officer, describes the AirTouch N30i as “a mask that redefines comfort with its soft, natural feel and sleep, modern design.”

The Pros of the AirTouch N30i Mask

There are a number of advantages to using the AirTouch N30i mask:

  • For those who find silicone mask materials irritating to their skin, especially if moisture get trapped between the frame and skin, the fabric material may offer relief. This may also reduce lines on the face that may be noticed in the morning.

  • Positioning the longer CPAP tubing at the top of the head may allow a restless sleeper to move more freely. If you are tossing and turning at night, it may be just the arrangement needed to avoid being tangled up in the equipment.

  • The design of the nasal cushion allows a quiet delivery of therapy with exceptional comfort. It literally floats at the end of nose, making it a great option to minimize the disruption of therapy.

The Cons of the AirTouch N30i Mask

There may be a handful of drawbacks in using the AirTouch N30i mask:

  • Generally, the tube-up mask design may encourage more time spent on the back or it may restrict movement. It can feel like it pulls as you try to change head positions at night. This reduced movement may lead to more complaints of neck or back pain.

  • Some people notice that there is pressure on the tubing at the top of the head, perhaps as the connection contacts the pillow or headboard. This may lead to friction and even hair thinning.

  • As this design does not include coverage of the mouth, someone who is prone to mouth breathing at night may experience dry mouth.

Mask Fitting and Alternatives

Recall that you are eligible to replace or to try a new CPAP mask every 90 days with most medical insurance coverage. It can be helpful to arrange a mask fitting through a local equipment provider when trying a new mask design. Sizing matters: there are small, medium, and large cushion sizes and both a standard and small frame size.

If you are interested in trying a similar mask with a tube-up design, consider these options:

  • Dream Wear

  • AirFit N30i

  • AirFit P30i (nasal pillows)

  • Dream Wisp

There are also a number of masks that are similar in cushion design that bring the tubing to the front, including the AirFit N30 and F&P Solo as well as other nasal pillows designs. When using a standard tubing placement, this can be rotated upward and either suspended from the headboard or a hook placed nearby for added stability.

For those who may be seeking relief from skin irritation, there are other options including mask liners (often cotton or other fabric) or barrier creams (i.e., RoEzIt, Udderly Smooth).

Conclusion

The AirTouch N30i represents an important innovation in a popular mask design It will be appealing to many people. Often when the right mask style and size is selected it becomes much easier to use and benefit from CPAP therapy. This is important to many who will derive important improvements in their quality of life and long-term health.
